Meet the Performers:
Sophie Sucre

You know her as Peek-A-Boo Revue’s sugar and spice and everything nice, but this burlesque performer is more than beauty and talent. Smart, grounded, and funny, she is here to tell you what dreams, inspirations, and fears brought Sophie Sucre into existence!

Born: Feb 10Sophie Sucre by ChrisKPhotography
Sign: Aquarius
Born: Guyana, South America
Hometown: Memphis, TN
Joined Peek-A-Boo Revue: Summer 2009

Artistic Inspirations or Icons: Eartha Kitt, Nina Simone, Miles Davis- Blue in Green, Erykah Badu, The Refugees, Mrs. Lauryn Hill, Josephine Baker, 1990s Hip Hop and R&B, Stax Records/Soul Music, Mary J. Blige, Girl Groups of 90s R&B, Beale St and BB King.

Childhood Fantasy: To be a performer on a Kids TV show: Kids Bop, Zoom, Mickey Mouse Club, Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple– although that talking head freaked me out.

Childhood Fear: My Grandma took pleasure in pushing her dentures out at me. To her it was hilarious, to me she looked like the Aliens monster when that second smaller head emerges from the mouth. I still get scared thinking about it,

Teen Fantasy: To be a Latin Ballroom Champion. On Friday nights, the local Memphis PBS station would air the international Latin Ballroom competitions from 9pm-2am. I used the wooden bottom base bannister of my childhood home as my partner. How I never broke my toe is amazing.

Teen Fear: Being stuck. Not specific to any place or time, but always feeling like I would be stuck somewhere, and never able to move forward.

College: Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA
Degree: BFA Dance and Choreography, minor Editorial Journalism
A piece of me will always be in Richmond, VA. I came into myself there, definitely became an adult there. I still have dear and amazing friends there, which give me a reason to go back from time to time. An amazing city for the arts; and a gold mind of some of the most interesting, beautiful, and complex human beings I know. Love you RVA!

Current Dreams/Goals: I’d like to go back to school for a Masters degree. Forcing myself to decide on what area of study is the first step. I hope to travel more as a performer. I really hope to see London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and to go to Brazil and South Africa before I die. I hope to dance until I’m dead. (Ya’ll gon’ have to scrape me off the stage) I want to use my art as force of change for good; artistically, politically, and spiritually. I’m also incredibly interested in the human body, how it works, the best ways to protect and care for it, and the amazingness with which it can heal itself.

Personal Mantra: I’ll figure it out.
